Expression and art: Possibilities of the artist's book and its application in a pediatric dialysis unit
Abstract
In this study addresses the artist's book or art book and its use in Art therapy. First, a brief path of its origins and history is made, to see the applications and possibilities that this tool/element has in Art therapy sessions carried out in a pediatric dialysis unit. Second, some brushstrokes are exposed on what kidney failure is, in order to contextualize the application of this instrument. After approaching the situation and the idea of a transitional object proposed by Winnicott (1971), two cases of adolescents undergoing this treatment and with whom have worked on the creation of an artist's book are presented and analysed. Thus, two pieces of evidence are provided on how this tool can provide great possibilities for education and the improvement of the capacities of patients in circumstances as complex as that suffered by children undergoing dialysis treatment. The artist's book can be a support in the most difficult moments, facilitate relationships between patients and become a meeting point and emotional discovery that can accompany them inside and outside the dialysis unit.
