Artists in schools. An opportunity for educational improvement?
Abstract
Artist residencies in schools are a growing practice in our country. This paper aims to analyse the state of the art of these projects, focusing specifically on the situation in Spain. To this end, international reference practices of artists in residence are put in context, and their main educational benefits described. Evidence shows that, despite raising difficulties and tensions, these types of partnerships bring remarkable benefits to schools. They can also change school dynamics. For these practices to be successful, it is paramount to foster collaboration among different agents and to develop strong resources for mediation, which will be the key factor in facilitating the adequate integration of the artist in the school environment.
