Abstract

In the parish church of Arenas de San Juan (Ciudad Real) an ensemble of wall paintings from the Middle Ages was brought to light in 1969. This paper deals with their iconographic and stylistic features. They show a cycle devoted to the passion of Jesus Christ, being recognizable a Last Supper and, more problematically, an Arrest of Jesus Christ and a Resurrection. They can be dated at the end of the 13th century, as an example of the period of consolidation of the linear Gothic style (although with some archaic trails), and they show connections with Toledan works of the 13th and 14th centuries which suggest a distinct identity of Toledan painting in this period, even though just a few works remain.
