Abstract

From its pagan origin, the myth of the phoenix evolved towards a fully Christian configuration, based on the authority of figures such as Tertullian or Lactantius. The iconographic richness of the motif throughout the 6th-7th centuries, with special attention to the double representation of the bird in Santa Eulalia de Bóveda (Lugo). Based on an iconographic reading of these images, this text seeks to establish a new hypothesis of interpretation based on the connection between the phoenix and the rite of baptism.
