Cartographic uprisings and environment. The Iconolasistas' mappings on mining in Argentina (2008-2011)
Abstract
In recent years, conflicts over the processes of appropriation and intensive exploitation of nature have been present in the socio-cultural sphere in general and the artistic sphere in particular. In the framework of exhibitions, biennials and art fairs, this phenomenon acquires a peculiar dimension: that of «turning off» or «neutralizing» the socio-environmental struggle. Regarding the advance of mega-mining in northwestern Argentina, the objective of this article is to glimpse the relationship between visuality and coloniality present in the regimes of seeing. Based on a decolonial theoretical framework, made up of the contributions of Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui and Boaventura de Sousa Santos, the counter-cartographic practices of the Iconoclassist duo on environmental problems are analyzed, taking into consideration the pieces Ni por todo el oro del mundo (2010) and Mina Bajo La Alumbrera (2011).
