Basque art and nature in the seventies. A relationship beyond the landscape

Keywords: Identity, conceptual art, Basque Country, land art, landscape, nature, ecology

Abstract

This article offers a different approach to the historiography of basque art in the 1970s. In contrast to the nationalist and identity debates elaborated on it, we will approach a reality that runs through many of the artistic practices that took place in that period and that are defining a new way of creating focused on the relationship of them with nature. Several pioneering works are described that linked with the natural environment from positions close to conceptual art and that surpassed the representations of the symbolic landscape that at the dawn of the 20th century were recreated by basque art.
