Identities of Uprooting and Diaspora. The Moriscos Crossing from Granada to Pastrana
Abstract
The moorish expulsion from the Kingdom of Granada and their dispersion throughout Castile, was one of the great mass population movements during the early modern age. It was a migration ordered by Felipe II after the Alpujarras war that displaced some 80,000 moorish after the armed conflict. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the case study of the Pastrana Ducal town, which in 1570 is the place of arrive one of the most important items, and the support/uprooting that its presence leaves on the urban structure of this population. Their abrupt arrival and the construction of a new neighborhood to host them, sponsored by the I Duke of Pastrana, Ruy Gómez de Silva and financed by rich moorish merchants, are studied. And the footprint of integration that silently generated its presence and the reproduction of popular gardens of andalusí tradition.
