Of Journeys with Books and Books’ Journeys. Some Reflections on the Salamanca Context by the End of the Fourteenth Century and the Beginning of the Fifteenth
Abstract
In many occasions, historiography has used the journeys of certain personalities to explain the presence of objects or concepts apparently alien to the local reality. This is what happened with Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé and its founder’s, Diego de Anaya, book collection. His volumes and novelties can only be understood considering his journeys outside the peninsula. Thus, it is presented a revision of the influence of these travels on the acquisition of books as opposed to the market situation in Salamanca. Additionally, a series of reflections on the reception and perception of these formal aspects by their patrons and first owners are laid out. This has been accomplished taking into consideration the historiographical practice that classifies the production of illuminated manuscripts according to their regional identities.
