Medieval Sumptuary Arts in the Current Staging of the Museo Arqueológico Nacional
Abstract
This paper analyses the presence of Medieval sumptuary art in the current new assemblage of the National Archaeological Museum. The artistic and historical developments in the whole range of cultures since the early Middle Ages to its decline, are fully covered. The exhibition makes the visitor move from the Guarrazar Treasure, through the Islamic ivory carving jewels such as the Zamora box and other ivory caskets, then to the Nasrid golden jewels, to the medieval Christian art, Romanesque, Gothic and Mudéjar, to end up with a set of important art pieces from various European countries. The whole collection has been deeply studied and each piece is displayed within its context in order to offer a didactic and aesthetic experience.Downloads
