The Sumptuary Arts in the Kingdom of Mallorca in the Second Half of 15th Century: Markets, Clients, and Artistic Taste
Abstract
The aim of this article is to expand the studies of sumptuary arts in the context of the Kingdom of Majorca, which have been centred in goldsmithing and textile arts. Thus here the focus of analysis are specific productions of enamelled glass and melted bronze imported by merchants from sites as distant as Damascus, Venice or Flanders. The goal is to reconstruct a corpus of objects (currently inexistent, with the exception of a few exceptional pieces) based on the thorough information gathered in the post mortem inventories compiled by the notaries at the time. Finally, there have been included some comments on the use and enjoyment of this sophisticated material culture by some members of the medieval society.Downloads
