Abstract

The discovery of the unknown document in which Johan Utuvert, pintor de retaules de Utrecht appear in 1399 in the city of Valencia introduces a new artist that will allow us to better understand the process of the assimilation and the evolution of the international gothic style in the Kingdom of Valencia. His possible influence on a mixed group of florentine, siennese, Cypriot, saxon, catalan, balearic and aragonese artist has been in question, but which is now demostrable with new evidence. His training in the county of Utrecht, near the duchy of Guelders, where the Limbourg brothers apprenticed, will allow us the comprehend the realization of the Saint George polyptych for the hundred crossbowmer’s guild (Victoria and Albert Museum, London), and the connection it has with the notebook of drawings in the Gabinetto dei Disegni e Stampe degli Ufizzi (Firenze).
