Abstract

The article deals with the study and the iconography of a painting by Luca Giordano (known in Spain as Lucas Jordán) currently on display at the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga in Lisbon. The picture reveals the deep religious feelings shared by the people of mid 17th Century Naples, specially marked by the Counter-Reformation, but also the taste of the Spanish monarch Carlos IV, who bought the picture for his collection. After his dead the painting passed into the hands of one of his daughters, Carlota Joaquina, queen of Portugal after his marriage to king Joâo VI.
