Darío, reader of Nietzsche
Abstract
To attain some understanding of Darío’s reading of Nietzsche, we interpret his article on Nietzsche and Multatuli, his short summary of Nietzsche’s philosophy published in España contemporánea, some textual quotations which appear in his chronicles, and some scattered references, paying special attention to the French sources he used. In his reading of the German philosopher we find an ambivalence which expresses itself in declarations of admiration as well as rejection, extensive but erratic readings, a superficial and intermittent interest, lost opportunities, laudatory as well as dismissive remarks, and finally a mysterious identification with the famous “Antichrist”.Downloads
