Abstract

In this paper I propose a search for the metatheatrical elements present in the theatre of Juan Mayorga whose purpose is to produce an aesthetic shock that reverses the sensitivity of the current spectator towards social injustice. For this I will begin with a socio-political analysis of the formation of the modern city and the paradigm shift in the reception of the contemporary spectator. I will take as a reference the philosophy of Walter Benjamin and his interest in Brecht's dialectical theatre for the suitability of the effects of estrangement to produce a dialectical thought. Finally, we will stop at Himmelweg and Hamelin, to study how metatheatricality, the gray area, and silence, as Brechtian gestus, produce a distancing in the spectator that fosters his ethical awareness towards otherness.
