Trade unions represent working class? Ideology and policy in Spain (2002-2020)
Abstract
The composition of the union membership continues to be traditionally dominant working class. But the growth of the middle class acquires special prominence. Both classes perceive their income as sufficient and comfortable, are satisfied with the progress of democracy and are oriented towards the centre-left.
On the contrary, the lower class of services and the precariat have little participation in unions; both groups of affiliates perceive their economic income as difficult, are located in the low-income deciles, are dissatisfied with the march of democracy and are oriented towards the centre-right political space.
The union world is fragmented. But the point of union is more in the field of politics than in the labour market. The confluence of interests lies in redistribution, in the defense and sustainability of the Welfare State
