The decline of employment in the comarca of El Bierzo since 2008: dimension of the problem and search for a trade union explanation
Abstract
The comarca of El Bierzo (León) was a prosperous area until the 2008 crisis, but it has experienced a sharp decline that is reflected in employment and population data. The objective of this paper is trying to find the explanation that best fits the loss of job opportunities through a combination of quantitative analysis and interviews with the regional secretaries of CCOO and UGT. The situation in El Bierzo is the result of a complex combination of factors against which there has been little labor and social conflict, but the conditions are in place for it to cease to be so.
