Advanced practice nursing and jurisdictional borders of Spanish health professions
Abstract
Progress in the professional development of Spanish nursing, an increase in its level of training, disputes over defining the jurisdictions of different health professionals and organisational processes aimed at reducing healthcare costs constitute the context in which the term advanced practice nursing has become popular in Spain. A term used to account for heterogeneous professional tasks and developments that coincide in requiring more extensive training and experience than those of general nurses, and which the nursing profession is using as a symbolic tool to project its aspirations and to develop strategies for expanding its jurisdictional borders.
