El paro hace daño
Abstract
Unemployment hurts
Empirical qualitative evidence found in a research on the consequences of unem-ployment —based on 88 in-depth interviews to unemployed people between March 2012 and February 2013 in 12 Spanish towns— reinforces the conclusions of statis-tical analysis about the relationship between unemployment and health. The testi-monies collected in this study: 1) do show that joblessness causes suffering (depres-sion, anxiety, muscle pain, suicidal thoughts); 2) they also reveal the frivolity with which proceed those who intend to reduce unemployment by means of decreasing unemployment protection. Unemployment hurts, one cannot fight against jo-blessness making it more difficult the lives of those who are unemployed.
