Possibilities of a critical-political art: Rogelio López Cuenca through Jacques Rancière.
Abstract
This paper is intended to analyze the work of the artist Rogelio López Cuenca departing from the theoretical considerations of Jacques Rancière about the relationship between art and politics. However, the aim is not merely to measure the artistic practice of the first up to the second’s theory. Quite the reverse, it is above all about raising the question whether it is possible a true demonstration of political art in Rancière’ sense. The key of the matter is not to propose this artist work as a privileged model for political art, but to consider it form the standpoint of the paradoxical character of the very notion of critical-political art and to assume the absolute contingency of its political nature. In order to address this task, the starting point will be a slightly older project of the artist, Decret nº1, which was planned for its exhibition at the Expo’92 of Seville and, however, was never showed to the public. The final consideration will be whether this work can be understood as a true representation of the political disidentification.Downloads
