The Ethical Sense of Utility in Concepción Arenal (1820-1893)
Abstract
Concepción Arenal was recognized and highly valued by renowned social reformers of the time such as Enoch Cobb Wines, who said that her proposal resembled the doctrine of Jeremy Bentham (Wines, 1880). In our view, Arenal’s contribution is closer to the utilitarianism of John Stuart Mill. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explain and compare the contributions of Concepción Arenal and John Stuart Mill. In this way, we approximate approaches that originate in the orbit of enlightened thought in order to clarify the ethical meaning that Arenal attributes to utility and interest.
