Abstract

Based on archeological field dates and analyses of the geographical and cultural landscape, the present article tries to rethink the site of Cahuachi (200 BC - 450 AD) in terms of a «ceremonial political center». This concept reintegrates to Cahuachi its residential function as well as its character of political and religious pole of the Nazca. A better understanding of the geographical surroundings of Cahuachi as a vital complement of the cultural landscape allows us to grasp the reasons for which this place was selected by the Nazca as their main site. From this understanding emerges the dimension of its spatial centerness between Cahuachi and the other sacred zones. Taking this perception from the collective perspective of the Nazca groups, it gave to the site the category of political regional axis.
