Abstract

The Zuñi were the first native people of New Mexico that the Spanish established contact with. This essay deals with Zuñi-Spanish relations and the determination displayed by the Zuñi in protecting their culture over a period of almost three hundreed years. Also the efforts of the royal officials and the Franciscan missionaries in transforming these American Indians into loyal subjects of the Spanish Crown are described.
