Andean Ceremonies and an Unconventional Heuristic: Memory Processes, Calendars and Inka Rituals
Abstract
At the Inka site El Shincal on the top of one of the ceremonial hills, two stone alignments were identified that were linked to two solar events with calendrical implications in the administrative ceremonial cycle. One marked the winter solstice, the date of Inti Raymi, and the other two dates related to the passage of the sun through the zenith of Cusco. This presentation shows the heuristic path through which the dates were discovered, a process crossed by ethnographic, archaeological and bibliographic experiences. In addition to describing the calendrical discovery, the story is constantly interpellated by the concepts of cultural memory and commemorative ceremonies, since it attempts to build an explanatory framework to build bridges between Andean ritual practices of the past and the present.
