Bones of the wild northern turkey Meleagris gallopavo Linnaeus, 1758, from the Arroyo Piedras Azules archaeological site, West Mexico
Abstract
The discovery of bones of the wild northern turkey, Meleagris gallopavo, in an archaeological site Arroyo Piedras Azules in western Mexico, is presented. The bird was found in an Early Preclassic context of the Aztatlán culture (1215 +/- 30). The bird is not nativeof the site. The importance of the species as food and in commercial trade is discussed.
