The Culture in the Arena of Mexican Wrestling: An Ethnographic Vision

Abstract

Mexican professional wrestling, as a popular expression of the people who produce it, continues having validity and expanding its visibility by media dissemination. TV broadcasts, however, even if they have increased the pool of potential viewers to all social classes, has not prevented that the Arena remains an essential meeting place for those who find real sense just in that scenario. Primarily based on field experience held in the Arena Mexico and Arena Coliseo of Mexico city, we will focus on the characteristics of wrestling within that scenario, the values that defines it, the important role of the public and the senses that has for him, an event that observed in conjunction with a panoramic view, constitutes a sign more of Mexican identity. Before that we describe its historical background, the characteristics that shapes it as competition sport, and the process followed during a performance of wrestling in Arena.
