Father’s education and authority: a qualitative exploration
Abstract
This paper presents a qualitative analysis of the social discourses that fathers and children develop about the dimensions of fathering: education and authority. For the empirical work 10 focus groups have been designed, eight with parents and two with children, in two Spanish cities, Madrid and Barcelona. The analysis is part of the theoretical context that affirms the succession of changes in the paternal institution with respect to the traditional father model and, more concretely, in the dimensions related to the normative role of father. From the sociological analysis of discourse, the results allow us to conjecture the redefinition of the role of the father in the studied dimensions, as well as a certain crisis of the hierarchy that traditionally regulated the father and sons relations.
