The birth of Hispanic studies in Japan: from the Philippines and Latin America to Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and the fisrt direct translations
Abstract
This article attempts to show the birth and evolution of Hispanic Studies in Japan, from the first Spanish classes in higher education, in late 19th century, to the publication of the first direct translations of Spanish literature, in the 1920s. This study will help visualize the importance of the Philippines and Latin America – Mexico and Peru in particular – as the first driving forces for Spanish courses in Japan, as well as writer Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s precious role as the catalyst of direct literary translations.
