Metaphor abuse and conceptual laxity in Communication
Abstract
In the field of Communication, metaphor abounds everywhere. Among the most important ones, the technological metaphor embedded in the Mathematical Theory of Communication has been most pervasive and influential during the last decades, because the premises and concepts underlying in it have shaped the academic reflection upon human communication. This paper attempts to argue that the main shortcomings in the definition of the field, largely due to formalism and conceptual laxity, stem from the abuse of the metaphor.Downloads
