Philogynist Writers in the Renaissance Debate on Remarriage: Sperone Speroni’s Del rimaritarsi

Keywords: Sperone Speroni, Del rimaritarsi, widows, remarriage, renaissance

Abstract

In the brief treatise Del rimaritarsi (1542) the Italian humanist Sperone Speroni deals with a topic of interest in the Renaissance, namely that of widows and remarriage. The analysis of this text is compared with those of other humanists of the same period, such as Erasmus, Fusco, Valier, Trissino, Savonarola, Zarrabin, Cabei, Trotto, Dolce or Vives, in order to understand that the defense of marriage also for the widow is one of the key elements of the new concept of family in modern society.
