Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show that Thomas Hobbes suggests an original understanding of the doctrine of the discernment of spirits (discretio spirituum) in the Leviathan. I claim that, from a radical reading of the concepts of spirit and prophecy in the Bible, the philosopher of Malmesbury proposes a discernment of allegiances as a way to control prophecy inside the State.
