Abstract

Introduction. The following paper analyzes the influence of the media agenda on rape culture by comparing and analyzing the media treatment by the national newspaper El País of the high-profile cases of sexual violence of La Manada and the Moroccan strawberry seasonal workers in Huelva. Objective. Specifically, we study the connection between the different discourse that the newspaper formulated about the cases and the also different support and mobilization of the Spanish society in this regard, in order to understand how these discourses affect our concept of rape and the visibility of the cases. Theoretical Framework and Methodology. The research carry out a content study, identifying different variables of analysis based on the theories of agenda setting and framing, from the point of view of rape culture and what it implies in the established imaginary. This analysis is applied to the coverage of both cases in a given time frame in the newspaper El País. Results. It is established that the triple discrimination to which temporary Moroccan migrant women workers are subjected (nationality, sex and class) affects the media treatment, both in terms of the attention received (number of news items and place of appearance) and their narrative form (attribution of responsibility, framing, support through opinion articles).
