Abstract

After the fall of the USSR and during much of the 1990’s, the U.S. utilized a diverse range of options to legitimize a policy of intervention abroad (e.g. containment of drug trafficking, the fight against terrorism, problems of underdevelopment and immigration in rogue states, etc.), of which, finally it emphasized the promotion and protection of religious freedom, understood as a pillar of human rights and democracy —hearkening back to the American historical memory, with traces of the present progressive international ideology—, thus revitalizing a messianism that, after the events of September 11, has turned into a type of religious-cultural geo-political game. This study will analyze the path leading up to this geo-political game as well as one of the first legitimizing instruments involved in this pursue.
