Rádio Inconfidência: the historical path of a Brazilian public broadcaster

Resumo

The paper aims to present a historical overview of Rádio Inconfidência in Belo Horizonte (Brazil), which despite claiming to be the first Brazilian public broadcaster, its history has not attracted the interest from researchers. Prepared through documentary research in collections of the official press and other periodicals, previous works and testimonies from radio hosts, the presented overview begins with the first efforts to create the radio, continues through the first years of operation, through the golden times and by the times of crisis on the radio since the Military Dictatorship period in Brazil. Finally, it reaches the current challenges related to political issues that have been threatening the existence of Rádio Inconfidência and other Brazilian public broadcasters in 2021.

Graziela Valadares Gomes Mello Vianna, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais

GRAZIELA Valadares Gomes de MELLO VIANNA (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 1974), PhD in Communications and Arts, research developed at São Paulo University (Faculty of Communications and Art) in Brazil and Sociology of Innovation Center in Paris. Her thesis was about radio language. Her previous master and undergraduate degrees where developed at Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Brazil, where nowadays she is an Associate Professor (level II) in the Social Communication Department (UFMG). She also directs the Research group ESCUTAS (Listenings) at UFMG. Her researches have the popular music, soundscapes, sound language and radio as major subjects.

Velise de Oliveira Maciel, University of Minas Gerais

graduated in Journalism at Centro Universitário de Belo Horizonte in 2003). She obtained an MBA in Cultural Management at Centro Universitário UNA in 2005 and a master’s degree from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in 2020 with a research about radio. She has professional experience in communications with a focus on radio. Nowadays she holds an Executive Producer position at Radio Inconfidência since 2005. She is scriptwriter for several radio programs, and has experience managing social media.
