Abstract

Founded in 1893 by the Valencian reporter Francisco Peris Mencheta, El Noticiero Sevillano was probably the first major general newspaper edited in the capital of Andalusia representing a new trend in journalism, growing since the end of the 19th Century. Its publication spanned a period of four decades, becoming the most senior newpapers of the hispalense Press and was one of the most highly circulated newspapers of the Andalusian region. El Noticiero was an independent newspaper with conservative tendencies, which became, during the Second Republic for some months, the only Republican newspaper in Seville. El Noticiero was an instrument of the radical party led by Diego Martínez Barrio, which eventually disappeared in early1933 due to the fierce competition of other local publications (ABC, El Liberal, El Correo de Andalucía, La Unión) and due to financial problems.
