Josefina Carabias and Mari Carmen Izquierdo: The Women Journalists Who Wrote About Football During the Franco Era
Abstract
During the Francoist era, the presence of female sports journalists who wrote about football —and footballers—was scarce, as it was a predominantly male-dominated sport. This article establishes a genealogy of these journalists and analyzes the discourse of their writings from a gender perspective. Specifically, it examines Esperanza Ruiz Crespo's book El hombre ideal (1943), Josefina Carabias's compilation of football chronicles in the book La mujer en el fútbol (1950), Mari Carmen Izquierdo's section “Ellas los ven así” in the newspaper As (1970-1972), and Francesca P. Petrella's book El otro Kubala (1974). Thus, we can determine whether these journalists offer resistance to the hegemonic patriarchal discourse on football through their perspective.
