Football and Labor Claims in the Spanish Press: The Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) and the 1981 strike
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the journalistic coverage provided by the Spanish press on the strike called by footballers in September 1981 through the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE). A content analysis of the news published by the newspapers As, Marca, El Mundo Deportivo, El País, and ABC was conducted to identify each outlet’s stance. The results show that most of the analyzed newspapers were highly critical of the footballers and their decision to strike. El País is the only newspaper that consistently supported the AFE footballers’ labor demands from the outset.
