Media representation of people with disabilities in television news and in the Spanish press
Abstract
This research examines the media portrayal of people with disabilities and related topics in Spanish television news and newspapers. A qualitative analysis was conducted on the evening news programs of TVE1, Telecinco, La Sexta, and Antena 3, as well as on the newspapers El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia, 20 Minutos, and La Razón between 27th November and 4th December 2023, coinciding with the week of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, when the media pays greater attention to the community. The results indicate that the representation of disability in Spanish media is inadequate, with little involvement of people with disabilities and a failure to accurately reflect the community's significance in society. The need to improve inclusion and awareness in the media coverage of disability is highlighted.
