La ciudad perdida and Terroristi a Madrid (1955): two film versions based on the novel by Mercedes Formica

Abstract

This article analyses, from a comparative point of view, the film adaptation of La ciudad perdida (1951), an original literary work by Mercedes Formica. Like the novel, the film directed by Margarita Alexandre and Rafael María Torrecilla suffered the consequences of censorship, giving rise to two versions: a Spanish one (La ciudad perdida) and an Italian one (Terroristi a Madrid). This research has made it possible to identify substantial changes between the two films that affect such important aspects as the script and editing, and which are linked to the construction of the image of the two main protagonists, Rafa and María. This leads to two different views: that imposed by censorship and that of the authors.
