Irene Polo in the Barcelona newspaper Las Noticias (1930-1932) Sixty-six unpublished articles

Keywords: Irene Polo, women journalists, Spanish’s Second Republic, daily press, Las Noticias

Abstract

This article describes Irene Polo's first job in a generalist newspaper, a set of texts hitherto unknown, basically interviews and articles. The articles found locate the first appearance of Irene Polo in the Barcelona daily press, not in La Humanitat at the end of 1931, as was believed, but in a newspaper written in Spanish, Las Noticias. These are 66 pieces that narrate the modernization of a city in which airs of the Republic are blowing, urban articles as ironic as optimistic, full of details, which incorporate people of different types and conditions. All in all, a renovating, civic and modern reporting that moves away from the information issued by the established powers and restructure the meaning of her professional career.
