Media treatment of self-injury in minors: Analysis of El País, El Mundo and ABC from 2012-2022
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze the treatment of self-injury in minors in the newspapers El País, El Mundo and ABC from 2012 to 2022. The sample universe consisted of 718 news items, 58 of which referred to self-injury and minors. A content analysis was carried out to determine the frequency of this topic and approach, identify the emotions associated with self-injury and identify whether there is gender bias. The results showed that the treatment of self-harm is very scarce, there is only a relative presence during the year 2022 and, in most cases, it is linked to suicide. Most of the news items allude to both sexes, but the autobiographical testimonies tend to be of the female gender as opposed to the male. It is also noteworthy that the emotions that prevail are the secondary ones linked to the social factor.
