Six propagandistic portraits of Pablo Picasso. Changes in Picasso's media image in the Czechoslovak press between 1913 and 1975
Abstract
The paper presents partial results of a project focused on the analysis of the media image evolution of some prominent figures of Spanish culture in the Czechoslovak environment throughout the 20th century. The objective of the investigation is to analyze to what extent the predominant ideological and political environment can influence or manipulate the image of a foreign element presented by the press to the public of the receiving country. After analyzing some three hundred articles in the Czech and Slovak press in the period from 1913 to 1975 dedicated to the subject of Pablo Picasso, the initial hypothesis has been confirmed: the media images in the environment of totalitarian regimes in many cases are created in accordance with the requirements of said political systems.
