A total radio for public broadcasting: the Eduardo Sotillos model on Radio Nacional de España (1981)
Abstract
Eduardo Sotillos served as the director of Radio Nacional de España (RNE) between January and November 1981, within the framework of the new 1980 Statute for RTVE. Sotillos proposed a renovation in RNE based on live broadcasting, information and the transversality of radio genres, under the slogan of total radio. This paper analyzes that transformation through the libraries in generalistic newspapers (El País, ABC, Diario 16, La Vanguardia) and magazines (Cambio 16, Tele-Radio), the programming of the First Program-Radio 1, and the unpublished report of RNE activities. The results reflect an internal –of the organization chart– and external restructuring –of the grid– that generated mixed reactions, but which laid the foundations for a new model in Spanish public radio.
