History in air combat cinematographic productions: The case of Tora! Tora! Tora!
Abstract
This article explains the documentation work for the American historical production, Tora! Tora! Tora! (Richard Fleisher, Toshido Masuda and Kinji Fukasaku, 1970), which was intended to be a quality film with historical rigor, without losing sight of the artistic and entertainment aspects of cinema. The Elmo Williams collection has been consulted in the archives of the Margaret Herrick Library, the Library of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. Through this correspondence, approximately 1,023 letters consulted, have been analyzed, applying a descriptive historical method, the different contributions received and the actions that led to the reliable reconstruction of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Thus, it is shown that it is possible to tell history in audiovisual format.
