The Barcelona of the Spanish Civil War through the eyes of Antoni Campañà. Photographic and historical analysis
Abstract
The photographs taken by Antoni Campañà (1906-1989) during the Spanish Civil War were hidden for over eighty years until their discovery in the autumn of 2018. This very important discovery provides a new look at Barcelona in war and revolution, offering complementary and unknown photographic material of events of great historical importance such as the Andalusian "Desbandá" of 1937, the protests over the food shortage or the effects of the national bombings, as well as unpublished portraits of the anarchist militiamen or figures such as Joan García Oliver. Of the more than 5000 unpublished war negatives discovered, in this work we analyse ten photographs that are representative of the author, his style and the period he portrays.
