The Cuban comic strip throughout history: its role in the consolidation of political power and as an instrument of subversion
Abstract
The Cuban cartoon strip was born in the 19th century, during the years of Spanish domination. Since then, this means of expression has been used in different periods of the history of Cuba, as an instrument for the consolidation of political power and as a vehicle of subversion. In this study, we undertake a short review of the history of the Cuban cartoon or comic strip during the colonial, neo-colonial and revolutionary periods with two basic aims: to analyze the contribution these publications made to the permanence of prevailing regimes and to identify those cartoons that were edited clandestinely, with the aim of eroding the structures of established order.
