Popular is radical. Anticlericalism and free love in Spanish chapbooks (XVIII-XIXth centuries)
Abstract
In this paper we have analyzed a corpus consisting of 100 chapbooks. Our objective is to determine whether the conservatism with which the Spanish popular literature is characterized can be qualified in the light of other historiographical interpretations, which give the contemporary popular press the status of radical. For this purpose, we have carried out an analysis of the content of the chapbooks, in which we have located elements of anticlericalism or irreligious discourse, on the one hand, and the proclamation of a relaxed sexual morality, on the other. We think that we can trace down the aspiration to make other models of religious and sexual behavior visible in the Spanish popular literature, allowing us to think about a certain degree of ideological radicalism.
