Guiding consciences... Policy, ideology and opinion in "La Región", a provincial newspaper
Abstract
This article examines the role of the newspaper La Región in shaping a Catholic and conservative alternative from its founding in 1910 to 1945. For this purpose, we use different documentary sources from public and private archives to discover the strategies of its main promoters and the struggle for control of public opinion in Ourense. The conclusions highlight the important role of the newspaper in many political operations promoted by different sectors of the right and the keys to its century-old survival, related to the decisive role of the clergy and their protective partners and the capacity for adaptation demonstrated to changes in governments and even in political regimes.
