The other perspective in Francoist Spain: origins of the TV show Informe Semanal (1973-1978)
Abstract
In 1973, Informe Semanal, a news broadcast of great success thanks to its technical, human and thematic innovations, aired its first episode. In this paper we reconstruct its origins through in-depth interviews with Televisión Española (TVE) professionals and the 1,351 reports broadcast between 1973 and 1978 to determine how it was designed and the difficulties faced by the pioneers of this TV show. Among the changes, it is worth mentioning the editorial board that enabled the execution of thematic suggestions with no restriction and openly anti-Franco approaches. In addition, women who worked at Informe Semanal had the chance to include unprecedented topics on television such as abortion, divorce or contraceptive methods. All this will eventually confirm that Informe Semanal is to be considered as an anti-Franco TV show.
