¿Breaking the law to maintain its spirit? A sketch of book censorship in the Basque Country
Abstract
A wide vision about book censorship in the Spanish ancient regime has been defined after the development of several pieces of work on that issue. In this paper we focus on the censorship of books in Basque language in the Castilla Counsil. The lack of documentation on that topic does not fit a growing literature that starts to consolidate in the 18th century. The analysis of this kind of production can provide us with hints on how to understand the censorship of the books of that time in a broader sense.
