The Colombian-Venezuelan border crisis on the screens: Analysis from political communication
Abstract
Colombia and Venezuela experienced one of their worst bilateral crises in 2015 with the closure of the border by the Nicolas Maduro government. Due to the impact that this closure had on the lives of border residents, the issue occupied the top of the agenda for an important period.
The Media Observatory of the University of La Sabana analyzed the coverage of the border crisis carried out by the RCN, Caracol and TRO newscasts seeking to identify the agenda, the frames and informative elements predominant in the mediatic construction of the crisis.
There is a strong imbalance in the mediatic construction of the conflict, a strong participation of citizen sources and a tendency to dominate dramatic approaches in informational frames, without abandoning the political component of the crisis.
